University of Waikato Scholarships for International Students 2022 – Apply

The University of Waikato Scholarships 2022 is now open to international students who wish to study in New Zealand. Funded Scholarships for Undergraduate, Masters, and PhD Degree programs are available to candidates from all around the world who wish to enroll in any of these programs.

The University of Waikato and its partners provide a variety of scholarships and awards to help students pay for tuition and living expenses, as well as to encourage academic and research excellence at the university.

Other funding opportunities, in addition to the scholarships it is currently offering, are available at the institution, including academic-led research project funding for master’s and doctoral studies, as well as external opportunities offered by other funders that support students at all levels of study.

List of Scholarships at The University of Waikato

University of Waikato Research Masters Scholarship

This scholarship (previously known as the University of Waikato Masters Research Scholarship) was founded in 1997 as part of the University’s commitment to graduate research.

The Scholarship provides financial support to students pursuing a master’s thesis at the University of Waikato.

The number of scholarships offered each year is based primarily on the total pool of funding available.

Each year, there are two rounds that end on the 31st of October and 30th of April.
Candidates who have already begun their thesis are also eligible to apply.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The Scholarship is open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and international
    students.
  • International students must have completed at least 120 points of study at a
    New Zealand university (by the closing date of the round in which they are applying) in
    order to be eligible for this Scholarship.
  • Candidates must be enrolled, or intending to enroll in a 500-level thesis of 90 points or more1 as
    part of their first master’s degree.
  • Candidates must have had contact with a potential University of Waikato master’s thesis
    supervisor. The potential supervisor may be asked to confirm their involvement
    with the candidate’s research.
  • Only for candidates who have not applied for this scholarship before. i.e., candidates may only apply
    once

Selection Criteria:

  • Selection of candidates will be based on Academic merit, with an expected minimum grade average of ‘A-’ for the candidate’s most recent 240 points of study. Where applicable, the Selection Panel may pay particular attention to results from the candidate’s 400- and/or 500-level papers.
  • Other factors possibly taken into consideration are the experience of the candidate (e.g., references, prior research and work experience, publications), knowledge of Mātauranga Māori and/or Pacific knowledges, alignment with the research priorities of the Divisions/Facultie/Schools and/or Research Institutes, financial hardship, and the strategic objectives of the University.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have not yet commenced their master’s thesis enrolment, and may be given to candidates who do have other scholarship funding.

Value and Tenure

The Scholarship will have a value of up to $15,000, and offers will be either Tier 1 or Tier 2, as follows:

  • TIER 1 – The amount awarded will be up to $15,000 to those studying a 120-point theses and up to $12,000 to those studying 90-point theses. Payments are as follows:
    • $5,500 credited directly to the tuition fees (not including the Student Services Levy) of the master’s programme. Credit will be made as soon as practicable after enrolment in the thesis paper has been confirmed.
    • Up to $9,500 paid directly into the recipient’s bank account in equal monthly instalments, with the final instalment to be withheld and paid on submission of the master’s thesis. The final instalment will lapse if the thesis is not submitted by the due date of the thesis paper enrolment.
  • TIER 2 – $5,500 credited directly to the tuition fees (not including the Students Services Levy) of the master’s programme after enrolment in the thesis paper has been confirmed.
  • If the recipient’s tuition fees for their master’s programme are less than the tuition fees component of the Scholarship above, the recipient will forgo any unused balance of the tuition fees component.
  • The tenure of the Scholarship is 12 months (pro-rata if part-time). When all or part of a recipient’s research does not take place within a 12-month period, some or all of the payments will be delayed to better align them with the period(s) of research.

Awarding, Conditions, and Ongoing Eligibility

  • The offer of a Scholarship must be accepted by the date indicated in the offer, or the offer will lapse. The offer of a scholarship will be conditional on:
    • confirmation that the candidate has a UOW supervisor in place for their master’s thesis of 90-points or more.
    • the candidate enrolling in a thesis of 90-points or more within six months of the closing date of the round in which they applied. To be clear:

a. Those who apply in the 31 October round must commence their thesis by 30 April in the year following application.

b. Those who apply in the 30 April round must commence their thesis by 31 October in the year of application.

  • The thesis should be completed within a 12-month period, although dispensation will be made in cases where the applicant is concurrently enrolled in a number of additional papers or two programmes of study.
  • Recipients wishing to change their enrolment (e.g., suspension, part-time, reduction in thesis points) must seek approval from the Scholarships Committee (via the School of Graduate Research).

University of Waikato Doctoral Scholarship

  • The Scholarship is open to all New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and international students
  • MSc degree is required for PhD
  • The application must be in English language
  • Good Academic Record required
  • Experience in Research for PhD programs is required
  • No criminal record will be there
  • Candidates should be intending to study full-time at the University of Waikato

University of Waikato International Excellence Scholarship

The University of Waikato International Excellence Scholarship was established in 2015 to promote educational opportunities, foster internationalisation and support talented international applicants who are enrolling as new students into undergraduate or postgraduate programmes at the University of Waikato. The Scholarships have a value of up to NZD$20,000 for undergraduate students and up to NZD$15,000 for postgraduate students, and will be awarded to applicants who have demonstrated excellent academic achievement. Successful applicants may also be called upon to become global ambassadors for the University of Waikato.

Eligibility Requirements:

This Scholarship is intended to support talented international students who are enrolling for the first time into undergraduate or postgraduate programmes at the University of Waikato. The Scholarships have a value of up to NZD$20,000, and will be awarded to successful applicants who demonstrate excellent academic achievement.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • be applying to enrol full-time in an undergraduate or postgraduate programme, as a new international student to the University of Waikato;
  • have received a conditional or unconditional offer of place from the University of Waikato (including a pathway offer for the Certificate of Attainment in English Language; International Diploma (Business); International Diploma (Computer Science) or Diploma of Postgraduate Preparation (Pre-Masters) at the University of Waikato);
  • have a minimum GPA-equivalency of B+ in the most recent qualification that was used to gain entrance to your qualification at the University of Waikato;
  • not currently be enrolled at the University of Waikato (including the Certificate of Attainment in English Language, the Certificate of Attainment in Foundation Studies, the International Diploma (Business) or International Diploma (Computer Science); Diploma of Postgraduate Preparation (Pre-Masters) or any other pre-degree pathway programme);
  • not have paid fees at the time of application;
  • not be coming to the University of Waikato via a sponsoring body (Examples of a sponsoring body are: governments, institutions and employers who fund student scholarships for study)
  • not be coming to the University of Waikato on a Guaranteed Credit Arrangement,or through a study abroad or student exchange agreement (Guaranteed credit arrangements are where an institution has a formal agreement with the University of Waikato whereby a student can study part of their degree at the partner institution and credit that study towards 1 – 2 years of study at the
    University of Waikato)

  • Applications for the Scholarship can be submitted at any time and decisions will normally be made within 8 to 12 weeks of the time of application.
  • Applicants must upload all of the following as part of their online application:
  • their conditional or unconditional offer of place from the University of Waikato;
  • a personal statement that sets out the following (on the template):
    • a) In 100 words or less tell the institution why you want to study at the University of
      Waikato?
    • b) In 100 words or less tell them how you will be a global ambassador for the
      University of Waikato?
